Patient VIP and Chaperone Info

Earl O'Brien Memorial Fishing Derby

Earl loved seeing kids enjoying fishing!

Participation as a Patient VIP is open to any current patient of our beneficiary hospitals, or former patient currently involved in hospital-provided child life programs such as therapy, camp or sports, 17 years or younger.

Patient VIPs must register in advance with a custodial parent’s signature. Each Patient VIP must be accompanied by ONE adult chaperone 18 years or older. Chaperones who are also custodial parents residing at the same address may register on the same form as their child. Chaperones who are not custodial parents or who reside elsewhere must register separately.

Patient VIPs and their chaperones are grouped onto designated charter boats — one boat can hold up to three VIP/Chaperone pairs. No additional participants are allowed. Designated photographers or journalists may join the group if approved by the charter captain and the VIPs in advance.

Those who have fished as Patient VIPs in the past will be placed on the waiting list to allow new patients a chance to participate. Available spots are dependent on sponsorship for the event, VIPs will be alerted as spots become available.

VIPs who are unable to join us on the main event date should ask about alternative fishing opportunities — we will put together additional charter trips if we can.

Grand prizes are awarded for the largest fish in Patient VIP and Sponsor categories. Additional prizes are awarded by drawing, and a fun prize is awarded to the smallest fish of the day. Chaperones receive giveaways but are not eligible to win prizes.

In case of inclement weather or lake conditions:  Our charter captains make the call in the morning if the weather is not suitable for their boat. Unless travel is unsafe, all participants should come to Chinook Pier—in the event their assigned charter cancels, participants may set up a different day and time to fish with their captain.
