Kiwanis of Michigan Foundation (KMF) focuses on those non-insurance-reimbursable Child Life programs that directly impact children undergoing treatment. Certified Child Life Specialists hold degrees in child development, psychology, education or therapeutic recreation. Their work focuses on reducing fear, anxiety and pain for hospitalized children through play, distraction, therapy and education.
CS Mott Children’s Hospital, Ann Arbor
The Child and Family Life team are trained professionals with expertise in helping reduce the stress and anxiety associated with hospitalization and illness. Our team members work together with doctors, nurses, social workers and others throughout the hospital to meet the emotional, developmental and cultural needs of children and their families.
Children navigating the healthcare environment often feel as if they have very little control and few choices in what goes on around them. The Child Life Department works as an integral part of the care team to return some of that control to young patients and assist in reducing the stress and anxiety often associated with hospitalization.
Mary Free Bed Hospital & Rehabilitation Center, Grand Rapids
Children often require specialized rehabilitation after catastrophic injuries or illness. MFB provides inpatient care and outpatient therapies designed for children and teens, and their adaptive sports program is widely known and respected.
HDVCH child life specialists minimize fear and stress, provide education and support for medical procedures, engage and energize children and families through play, music and art therapy, and special events. Additional programs provide educational opportunities, support for families affected by illness or trauma, and encourage participation in the child’s health care.
